GS Inima and Nama PWP sign agreement for Ghubrah III desalination
MUSCAT: Under the patronage of Dr. Saud bin Hamoud Al-Habsi, Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries, and Water Resources, an agreement was signed between Nama Power and Water Company and the CDCo, for the third phase project of the Ghubrah desalination plant, the largest plant and one of the prominent strategic projects in the water sector in the Sultanate of Oman.
The CDCo comprises a consortium of three international and local companies leaded by GS Inima, a world benchmark in the water sector with more than fifty years of experience and one of the leading companies globally in water desalination and treatment, and a pioneer in desalination by reverse osmosis, the Saudi-based Aljomaih Energy and Water Company and the Omani-based Sogex Company.
The plant, that will be designed and built by GS Inima as EPC contractor, it is expected to start operation in the first quarter of 2027 representing a significant step towards enhancing water security in the Sultanate of Oman. The investment cost of the Ghubrah desalination plant (phase three) is estimated at around 125 million Omani rials, with a production capacity of 300,000 cubic meters per day of desalinated water. The plant’s capacity accounts for approximately 20% of the contracted capacities in the main water network.
Marta Verde, CEO of GS Inima and Chairperson of the Capital Desalination Company, expressed joy for being a partner in developing energy and water projects in the Sultanate of Oman and valued Nama’s trust in developing an important project like the Ghubrah desalination plant. She emphasized, “We are aware of the importance of this Project and how it will contribute to prevent water scarcity. This is an example of good work and cooperation between the Government and the private sector, based in anticipating and addressing the population needs to cover them with the most efficient solutions. Our commitment is fully aligned with the Sultanate of Oman to help in achieving its strategy and objectives.”
Ahmed bin Salem Al-Abri, acting CEO of Nama Power and Water, stated: “The agreement confirms Nama’s commitment to meeting the growing demand for water and electricity and continuous work on implementing new projects to achieve energy security and provide fresh water through expanding the production of energy and desalinated water at the best economic cost.” The plant operates with the latest water desalination technologies, utilizing reverse osmosis technology, contributing to enhancing electricity consumption efficiency and increasing the capacity of producing desalinated water to meet current and future population growth requirements. The plant’s area exceeds 70,000 square meters and includes a potable water tank with a capacity of 45,000 cubic meters per day.
Dr. Suhaib Abudayyeh, CEO of Sogex Oman, expressed confidence that the engineering capabilities, technical expertise, and extensive experience in the water desalination field possessed by the alliance companies of Ghubrah III would contribute to enhancing the plant’s operational efficiency and reducing production costs.
Marta Verde concluded, “By combining all our experiences, this consortium will optimize the works and will introduce in Oman the most disruptive technology available in the market.”
Fully committed to water supply and sustainable development in Oman, GS Inima will have a water production capacity of 400.000 m3/day in the country between Barka V and Ghubrah III desalination plants. GS Inima prioritizes sustainability by adhering to the highest standards, including providing practical design solutions, minimizing electricity consumption, and enhancing quality through water quality control systems in operation and maintenance.
