MUSCAT: During Oman Sustainability Week, Oman Shell and Oman Airports Management Company announced land allocation for Shell’s Green Hydrogen for Mobility project.

The land assigned for this project is owned by Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) and is located near Oman International Airport. Construction will commence as soon as the necessary permits are secured, with the station expected to be on stream in 2024.

Commenting on this milestone, Walid Hadi said: “This station will be the first station in Shell globally to have the hydrogen production unit on site, which will help achieve the maximum energy efficiency. Taking an integrated energy approach, the station will be partially solar-powered and will include multiple mobility solutions including electric vehicle (EV) charging units, hydrogen fuelling units as well as other fuelling products and non-fuel retail products and services.”

Sheikh Aimen Al Hosni, CEO of Oman Airports, stated: “The vision of Oman Airports environmental sustainability strategy is to work together with all our stakeholders towards a greener Oman for generations to come. The Green Hydrogen for Mobility Project in partnership with Oman Shell is an important investment to the existing infrastructure, which will reduce carbon emissions and provide a more sustainable environment for the residents around Muscat Airport. The introduction of hydrogen cars to our fleet and having a state-of-the-art hydrogen station set up near the premises of Muscat Airport will be a major step towards a more sustainable future for Oman, in line with Oman Vision 2040 and Oman’s Net Zero by 2050 ambitions.”

The Green Hydrogen for Mobility project is Shell’s 6th Gift to The Nation (GTTN). Gift to The Nation (GttN) is a tradition initiated by Shell in 1995, the 25th anniversary of Oman’s Renaissance, to launch a new project every five years that carries a small contribution to the development of Oman’s society and economy.

GttN projects are selected very carefully, with the involvement of experts from Shell and other external professionals, with sustainability and long-term impact as key conditions to choosing the project.

In its first phase of the Green Hydrogen for Mobility, Oman Shell signed an agreement with Oman Airports Management Company in 2022 to give 15 hydrogen cars to Oman Airports and to build a hydrogen station near the airport.
