Oman said it is making tireless efforts to meet the challenges of climate change as it affirmed its commitment to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change and the 2015 Paris Agreement.

In a speech at the 55th session of the UN Human Rights Council, Ambassador Idris bin Abdul Rahman Alkhanjari, Oman’s Permanent Representative to the UN in Geneva, said the Sultanate was encouraging investment in sustainable agriculture to improve the capabilities of human societies to adapt to climate change.

He said: “We must work to consolidate biodiversity in order to reduce dependence on chemical inputs and improve food distribution systems and market infrastructure in order to ensure effective and equitable distribution of food, especially in times of shocks and disasters related to climate change.”

The Ambassador said Oman aimed to achieve net zero neutrality in greenhouse gas emissions in all development sectors by 2050 and to meet the goals of the 2030 Sustainable Development Plan as it called for unified regional and international efforts aimed at building a sustainable world for future generations.

He said food insecurity in the Gaza Strip as a result of the aggression and blockade imposed by Israel significantly contributed to climate change and air pollution in the area especially since the war machine used internationally banned white phosphorus and burned agricultural lands and ancient trees.
