MUSCAT: Working in cooperation with OQ Exploration and Production Company, the Oman Centre for Governance and Sustainability organized on 15th February 2023 the 3rd Sustainability Conference on the theme, “The Impact of Greenhouse Gas Emissions: Towards Carbon Neutrality”.

The conference focused on investigating the impact of greenhouse gas emissions as a result of various activities that cause carbon emissions in different sectors, including the construction sector, the aviation sector and the oil and gas sector. The opening ceremony was held under the auspices of His Highness Dr. Fahd Al Julanda Al Said, Vice Chancellor of Sultan Qaboos University, and it was attended by representatives of the departments concerned.

The conference included sessions on managing the process of cutting down greenhouse gas emissions reduction and reporting them and visual presentations and working papers on solutions provided by financing institutions in carbon neutrality. It also included a session of discussion on raising energy efficiency and switching to sources of renewable energy.

Sayyid Hamid Sultan Al Busaidi, Executive Director of Oman Centre for Governance and Sustainability, said, “The conference coincides with the next phase of the Oman Vision 2040, in which clean energy serves as a fundamental factor in achieving carbon neutrality.” He pointed out that countries seek to reach zero neutrality and reduce carbon emissions between 2030 and 2050.

Al Busaidi added that the conference studies the impact of the sectors of transportation, aviation, gas, oil and energy sectors. He said that the conference considered different solutions to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, like improving transportation, using technology in extracting oil and gas, educating the community on clean energy uses and protecting the environment through recycling, cutting down pollution and landscaping in desert areas.
